Summary on Grant Application Form
Non-contact mode atomic force microscopy will be used to study selected metal oxide surfaces in ultra high vacuum. A new commercial instrument funded by Manchester University will be used for this purpose. Ti02(100), MgO(100) and alpha-Al203(0001) are chosen as the model surfaces on the basis of previous experience and technological relevance. The initial aim is to achieve atomic resolution, which has not yet been demonstrated for an oxide surface. The first substrate to be studied would be vicinal Ti02(100), since it can be imaged with STM in the same instrument and contains several length scales. In parallel with the experimental effort, computer modelling will be used to understand the origin of the image contrast and to predict instrumental conditions with which to improve and/or modify the contrast. For instance, modelling of the surface scanning at constant cantilever frequency change will be performed using a semiempirical embedded cluster method. Work on clean surfaces would be followed by a study of rhodium growth on the various reconstructions of alpha-alumina (0001) in an attempt to identify nucleation sites.
