Summary on Grant Application Form |
There are many new types of display effects in nematic liquid crystals that are being researched and developed. In order to optimise the structure and materials for these effects accurate modelling is essential. We propose to model in two or three dimensions, as necessary, the switching of the liquid crystal in a variety of specific structures important to display manufacturers. Time domain modelling will allow the drive schemes used to address a complex display to be incorporated into the model. Defects are known to form in complex matrix twisted nematic displays, the most popular complex LCD for laptop computers and other high information data graphic displays. The defects are generally three dimensional in nature. Most recent developments in liquid crystal displays include In-Plane Switching ((IPS) devices and Axially Symmetric Microcell (ASM), both of which require accurate modelling to help to improve and understand the switching and other properties. We will be discussing the structures and results with the industrial collaborators to ensure that the research is highly relevant to the display industry. Also, we will attempt to verify experimentally the modelled results, using test devices supplied by the collaborators.
