High resolution reciprocal space mapping is a very novel tool for the non-destructive investigation of microstructure in man materials. Whilst it is in routine use in some areas - e.g. semiconductors - there are many materials systems which remain unexplored and the potential of the technique for non-destructive analysis of microstructurally complex thin films has yet to be fully realised. This proposed research is to develop analyses of 2D and 3D reciprocal space maps to solve for microstructure and phase, including lattice parameter, orientation and strain, for three key materials structure types, in particular for metal multilayers and self-aligning molecular crystals.
