Summary on Grant Application Form
There has been world-wide interest in intrinsic Josephson effects in high temperature superconductors. Most of the experimental work has been done on single crystals and thin films of the highly anisotropic thallium- and bismuth-based superconductors. Intrinsic Josephson effects have however recently been observed in c-axis oriented YBCO films. In our work we will investigate intrinsic Josephson effects in a-axis oriented YBCO films. The resulting device structure ( a simple patterned microbridge) is much easier to fabricate than with c-axis films, since the relevant transport direction is now in the plane of the substrate. Having confirmed the presence of intrinsic Josephson behaviour in a-axis films, we will optimise the power emitted from an a-axis microbridge with a view to applications in sub-mm-wave astronomy and metrology.
