Nerodegenerative disease, leading to cognitive and mental impairment, is a major healthcare problem. Three conditions account for most of this disability: Alzheimer's Disease, Fronto-Temporal Dementia, and Vascular Dementia. Although their symptoms are superficially similar, the pathology underlying the three conditions is different, and very different therapeutic strategies are required. Differential diagnosis is based on a range of investigations including imaging. The standard imaging investigation is a 3-D MR scan of the whole brain. The aim of the proposed project is to develop a fully functional system to aid neuroradiologist in the differential diagnosis of dementias from 3-D MR images of the head. This will require the relevant structures to be identified automatically sufficient accuracy for subtle patterns of atrophy to be differentiated. The project will build on our recent work on modelling shape and grey-level appearance, which will be exploited both in locating the structures of interest and in characterising patterns of atrophy. This will require a significant extension of the techniques and new work on obtaining clinically useful information from complex sets of measurements.
