Summary on Grant Application Form |
Estimation of the flow separation induced pressures (buffet) on combat aircraft remains a complex problem and yet is an important part of the clearance process. It would be advantageous if the full scale vortex induced buffet on modern high performance combat aircraft could be predicted early in the design process.Recent collaborative research programmes between the Principle Investigator and British Aerospace have delivered an understanding of the influence of wing platform on buffet and demonstrated the development of a process for the prediction of fin buffet early in the design cycle.British Aerospace will make available unique and extensive flight test information from the Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP) which will enable extension of the buffet research programme to include scale effects. Within the proposed programme, the EAP data will be related to low speed wind tunnel experiments and steady CFD (supported by BAe) to enable the development of a wing buffet prediction process which accounts for scale effects.
