Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims to develop a software environment for the construction of data browsers to refine usable knowledge from data. The data may be held statically (e.g. in a database) or fed directly from an on-line source. The browser will generalise in the case of sparse data, and summarise where a large volume of data is available. Human experts will be able to interact with the browser, and add their own expertise to the knowledge base. Fuzzy and probabilistic methods will be used to generate rules and Bayesian net models. The research will be a practical based on the theoretical foundations of mass assignment theory developed by Prof. Baldwin during his 5 year EPSRC Senior fellowship. Neural and genetic programming techniques will be used to generate compound features. The system will be implemented as a toolkit in a fuzzy object-oriented environment. The user will construct a data browser from a mixture of custom-built and library components. Three demonstrators. Of interest to industry will be investigated. These have been carefully chosen from different problem domains to illustrate the wide ranging applicability of the new approach. It is expected that commercial spin-offs will follow the research.
