Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our facility for viewing convective flow patterns in quantum fluids at low temperatures will be enhanced to permit continuous observation of pattern formation dynamics in normal liquid helium, normal 3He/4He mixtures and superfluid 3He/4He mixtures. The importance of this new development in experimental fluid dynamics is that several new pattern-forming convective fluid systems have become available that combine unrivalled thermal resolution with a Prandtl number range between 0.02 and unity. Pattern instabilities such as the focus instability and the appearance of spiral defect chaos should be observable and their dynamics will be studied. The low Pandtl number regime of the Busse balloon will be investigated. Experiments on the effects of rotation on flow patterns are proposed: the distinction between wall and body mode convection should be visible. We anticipate being able to observe the change in flow pattern in the vicinity of a codimension-two point. The possibility of using 3He as a tracer material in 4He flow experiments at high Reynolds numbers will be investigated experimentally.
