Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is motivated by the recent development in spark ignition engines with stratified EG, which have been identified as the most promising approach for the next generation of SI engines. The understanding of the effects of stratified EGR on combustion and pollutant formation is a prerequisite to the optimisation of the design of SI engines with stratified EGR. The aim of this proposal is to provide such information by conducting controlled experiments on a specially built IC engine and by engine combustion modelling. It will be the first time that such a systematic investigation of stratified EGR would be carried out. As stratified EGR can substantially increase the dillution limit in spark ignition engines, it is the preferred way to use EGR for spark ignition engines. The higher EGR tolerant combustion system will substantially reduce the pumping losses as well as NOx emissions. The results of this investigation will provide better understanding of the effects of stratified EGR or air on combustion and emissions and important information on the key stratification parameters, thereby assisting in the optimisation of engine design to achieve higher EGR tolerant combustion system. The wider use of stratified EGR in spark ignition engines will lead to much improved fuel economy and reduced emissions for most of passenger cars.
