Summary on Grant Application Form
Image guided interventions promise significant benefits to the patient in terms of reduced invasiveness and greater accuracy with the potential for lower morbidity and improved outcome. This proposal concerns research to develop a safe and effective navigation tool in which anatomical and pathological information derived from pre-operative MR and CT images injected into a binocular operating microscope as stereo overlays. In this project we will:1. Integrate a tracking device, stereo image injection system and video camera into a conventional operating microscope in collaboration with Leica, in order to provide an integrated system which is easy to use, sage and accurate in the surgical environment.2. Devise new visualisation methods which give the surgeon accurate perception of the 3D location of critical structures with the optimal means for the surgeon to control the content of the overlaid displays.3. Devise new more accurate and more automated methods of registering the 3D pre-operative representations with the surgical scene, and ensuring that this registration is maintained, in particular exploring the role of video techniques and intra operative ultrasound in assessing and updating registration.4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the device in the surgical environment.
