The objective of the research is to investigate the nature, mode of formation and modification by external influences of irradiation damage defects in diamond using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), related techniques and optical spectroscopic methods. On the whole previous EPR studies have revealed very little because the low natural abundance of 13C has precluded the use of 13C hyperfine couplings in the determination of defect structures and the samples studied contained high levels of uncharacterised impurities and defects leading to uncertainty in the assignment of extrinsic or intrinsic defects. The high purity and specifically doped 13C enriched diamond made available for this work make the studies envisaged feasible. The irradiation damage experiments at 77k and subsequent annealing studies will enable a coherent picture of self-interstitial migration, interstitial and vacancy complex formation, migration and destruction to be established. Studies of the preferential orientation of defects created by irradiating a sample subjected to uniaxial stress will provide information on the symmetry and structure of the defects along with permitting thermally activated reorientation to be studied which will complement the data on mobilitites determined from annealing studies.
