Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of coated steel products has grown dramatically for roof and wall cladding of industrial, commercial and domestic buildings. The key reason for this growth are the combination of quality, reliability, cost-effectiveness and aesthetic appeal of these materials. However, the pressure of rigorous international competition demands the evolution of products which possess enhanced durability and resistance to service condition. The principle requirements are for enhanced resistance to corrosion and photochemical degradation. These improvements must be made whilst maintaining aesthetic standards and improving environmental acceptability. In addition, the service lifetime of new materials must be predictable, thus requiring the kinetics and mechanism of possible degradation processes to be properly characterised. The present market-led project has therefore been designed to develop and evaluate a range of novel polymer, pigment and surface chemistries for the preparation of organic coated galvanised steels. Fundamental studies will be undertaken into the kinetics and mechanisms of both bond development between coating layers and processes of coating degradation and delamination. Coating formability and the effects of forming subsequent durability will also be quantified.
