Summary on Grant Application Form |
Using methods which draw on a range of existing techniques, a unique experiment will be constructed in order to record the magnetic properties of small metallic clusters at 1K. The method will involve 'growing' iron, nickel clusters etc. inside helium droplets (10M atoms) to provide species with a known temperature which is defined precisely by their environment.. The magnetic properties of these clusters will then be probed using a classic Stern-Gerlachmagnetic deflection arrangement.
