Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme seeks to combine the fundamental ideas of spin electronics with semiconductor physics in order to realise a high gain magnetically sensitive transistor. The principle of the device involves the injection of a spin polarised diffusion current into the base of the transistor and the inclusion of a reversible magnetic barrier layer thus allowing magnetic control of its gain. A successful feasibility study has both demonstrated the viability of spin injection into silicon and identified many of the remaining questions which this project seeks to address. Both the performance and fabrication of each stage of the device will be optimised before the construction of the complete transistor. This will involve the fabrication and testing of both fundamental test structure to evaluate tunnelling and p-n junction injector stages, a comparison of ion implantation and diffusion doping and of either cold welding to the two halves of the device or direct deposition of polysilicon. Extensive use will be made of the microelectronics facility at Southampton University where the relevant semiconductor fabrication expertise exists. All the magnetic and electrical characterisation will take place at the Universities of Oxford and York where the device performance will be evaluated.
