Summary on Grant Application Form |
Electrostatic charging is potentially important in erosion, partly because the electrostatic stored energy enhances mechanical damage and because discharges may trigger ignition of flammable gases. Wwe plan to model the associated charge transfer on the atomic scale (seen in scanning probe microscopy) and the charging observed macroscopically in erosion. In doing this, we will exploit our atomic-scale modelling of charge transfer in atomic force microscopy; our mesoscopic approaches to linking length scales in studies of friction, and our continuum methods for indentation and conventional erosion (without charge transfer). If successful, the fuller understanding of contact charging and tribocharging could lead to significant amelioration of charge-related erosion problems.
