Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to study the effects of noise on nonlinear dynamical systems. Experimentally, we shall study a liquid crystal system in which thermal fluctuations are known to have an effect on bifurcations. These can be controlled by the application of an external magnetic field. The mathematical approach will be to consider flows perturbed by discrete noises and iterated function systems these generate. We shall study bifurcations in families of these systems and derive statistical characterisations which will be compared with the experimental work.
