Recently there have been significant advances in mathematical modelling of the ultrasonic non-destructive techniques (NDT) of detecting defects in industrial materials. The upsurge of interest in this problem is due to the fact that with modern computers a practical ultrasonic examination can be simulated in less time and for less money whilst occupying much less laboratory space than castings for physical calibration tests would take. The purpose of this proposal is to develop new, more efficient techniques for simulating the propagation, scatter and detection of ultrasonic mono-chromatic waves and pulses in ferritic steels which are used in the UK nuclear and chemical industries for construction of pressure vessels. Our aim is to improve the ability to describe ultrasonic fleds in such steels in the vicinity of cracks situated near transducers and inspection surfaces - by developing the ray/boundary layer high-frequency asymptotics of the field received at the transducer, so that an accurate code hundred times faster than any code based on a full numerical scheme can be created for use in routine NDT, and thus available instrumentation can be put to better use through improved interpretation of ultrasonic inspection data or maybe more efficient new instrumentation can be designed.
