Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have demonstrated that polyaniline films cast from camphorsulphic acid/m-cresol solutions have partial metallic electrical transport and very distinctive x-ray diffraction patterns. Crystallographic determination is however very difficult as only a few peaks are observed in these diffraction patterns. To do this we will use model compounds, synthesised on a recent European project. Single crystals or polycrystalline samples will be grown from both the base and salts of these model systems and crystal structure determinations undertaken. By use of molecular modelling and the crystal structures of the model compounds we aim to fit the x-ray data of the polymer systems and so correlate structures which give rise to the metallic conductivity. We will also study a new acid/solvent systems recently discovered in Durham (currently being patented) which also gives samples with metallic transport and offers better processing possibilities. Film and fibre samples of a range of polyaniline systems will be studied and the effects of alignment studied to determine how bulk transport properties are controlled by transport in the respective crystalline and amorphous regions of the sample. The amorphous phases will be investigated using small angle x-ray diffraction and neutron scattering in conjunction with RDF modelling.
