Summary on Grant Application Form
The aims of the project are to research and develop novel approaches to the design of the two-way radio on fibre transponder, and to assemble demonstration hardware, consistent with the overall system requirements for radio on fibre networks. Low cost is very important since in a microcellular network, very large numbers of base stations will be required. The range of the radio signals must be consistent with an efficient frequency re-use pattern. The transponder design should integrate transmit and receive functions. Two initial outline configuration are proposed, and these will be studied both theoretically and practically to establish detailed designs methodologies, performance parameters compatability with the power levels and modulation schemes required in system applications. The proposed configuration will be refined and optimised. The end result will be the first known practical implementation of an integrated compact duplex transponder, which is low in cost, high on reliability and has the appropriate combination of low-noise, stability, high linearity and efficiency for use in the remote stations of a radio on fibre systems.
