Summary on Grant Application Form |
Traffic exhibiting similar behaviour over a wide range of time scales has been observed on packet date, Ethernet, variable rate video and common channel signalling networks. This has prompted the study of models that can capture such self-similar behaviour. Most approaches focus on developing stochastic models based on Fractional Brownian Motion; but the queuing theory to apply these models to traffic engineering problems of practical interest is still at an early stage. Research at Queen Mary has taken a different approach, self-similar traffic is modelled based on dynamics in the form of chaotic intermittency maps. An EPSCR funded research student in the Dept. of Electronic Eng, has developed an accelerated techniques for modelling aggregate traffic streams. The techniques, currently the subject of a patent application, exhibits a broad range of self-similar behaviour and is fast enough to use on-line. This gives the possibility of controlling self-similar behaviour in networks, by applying techniques for chaotic control which have been developed by the dynamical systems group in the Maths Research Centre. Having demonstrated feasibility, support from EPSRC is now sought to implement simulation software and evaluate this approach compared with existing methods, specifically in the application to fast resource management in ATM.
