Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new generation of computing systems, replacing current workstation networks and many multi-processor computers, can and should be designed now, to take advantage of next generation optical networking, which supports high bandwidth, low latency intercommunication. The term 'distributed shared memory' has been coined to describe systems where at least part of each workstation's memory is directly visible to others on the same local area network (LAN). Here we use the term 'locally distributed shared memory', recognising the limitations imposed by speed of light on latency reductions outside the area of a single site for distributed nodes. Its is proposed that systems to harness the power of optical networking must have radically simplified architectures: hardware, software and communication protocols. The project is to develop and evaluate such an architecture for flexible local area computing, to run demanding applications.
