Summary on Grant Application Form
A detailed study of narrow and wideband impulse noise data recorded on the copper access network of BT will be performed. Initially the cause and statistical characteristics of the data will be analysed to determine for each individual impulse, the duration, energy and amplitude. In addition the impact on different transmission formats within the various digital subscriber line (xDSL) systems. In particular single (CAP/QAM) and multicarrier modulation formats (DMT). In the second stage a probabilistic model will be developed to aid the design of xDSL systems and also to provide a test capability for Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) and Very high sped DSL (VDSL) transmission systems. Finally the potential impact on the adaption layers of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) when used in VDSL systems will be assessed.
