Summary on Grant Application Form |
A 4th generation X-ray microtomography system (comprising X-ray generator, slow scan CCD camera and precision electromechanical positioners) with the unique capability of scanning specimens up 5 cm diameter and 20cm long with up to 5 (micro meters) resolution will be assembled . Its principal design feature of time delay integration CCD readout, which allows study of large specimens at high resolution will be copied from our present system which has 40 (micro meters) resolution. The new system will as in the present one, be fitted with a loading stage to allow in situ studies of deformation and fracture. Projects include: observation and quantification of dammage in fibre reinforced plastic materials; investigation of fatigue crack closure following constant amplitude loading and following overloading; microstructural studies of normal and osteoporotic bone (including local elastic and fracture behaviour); trabecular regrowth following surgical loss of trabecular connectivity in sheep; changes in 3D distributions of mineral and permeability in teeth modelling caries processes; in vitro studies of root canal treatment; microstructural characterisation and deformation in natural composites as an aid to design of synthetic composites; and studies of image quality (e.g. dependence on scanning locus) and artefacts (e.g. errors in linear attentuation coefficients, noise) in reconstructed images.
