Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to establish a departmental facility for thermal characterisation of materials, with instrumentation for differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This facility will underpin several multi-disciplinary research programmes in the solid state/materials field. The research programmes encompass studies in the following areas: 1) Chemical transformations and phase transitions in organic solids; 2) Properties of new microporous solids; 3) Non-covalent synthesis of liquid crystalline materials; and 4) New aspects of oxide materials. These projects cover a range of fundamental and applied issues of contemporary interest, with characterisation by DSC and TGA representing crucial components in studies of temperature-dependent phenomena. These phenomena include phase transformations, chemical reactions (and their kinetics), thermal stability of solids, determination of the composition of complex materials and optimisation of the preparation and processing of solids. The materials of interest include: solid inorganic inclusion compounds, rotator phase solids, liquid crystalline phases, microporous solids (including zeolites and related phases), high TC superconductors and a wide range of other oxide materials, high performance pigments and hydrogen-bonded solids. The acquisition of DSC and TGA instrumentation will strengthen considerably the infrastructure for research in the solid state/materials field within the School of Chemistry in Birmingham.
