Summary on Grant Application Form
A potential energy surface for He-H2^+ will be obtained by combining the r-dependent surface of Kraemer with the long-range surface of Falcetta and Siska. Coupled channel calculations will be carried out on this surface to establish the pattern of near-dissociation levels. The necessary angular momentum theory will be developed to establish the hyperfine patterns expected for the predicted lines. Plausible assignments will be identified by comparing the predicted frequencies and will be adjusted to seek agreement with experiment. Once an assignment is achieved, it will be used to predict new lines for testing by experiment. Finally, the experimental data will be used to refine the potential surface by least-squares fitting.A similar approach will be adopted for other species of interest such as Ne2^+. As other ionic systems become experimentally topical, theoretical methods to handle their spectra will be developed.
