Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will develop a broadband millimetre-wave over fibre system offering reduced insertion loss, low dispersion penalty and potential for reduced cost through integration. The base station will use the first millimetre-wave Optical Injection Phase Lock Loop (OIPLL), allowing efficient and high spectral purity generation of broadband modulated optical signals over a wide range of millimetre-wave carrier frequencies, for semiconductor lasers of non-critical linewidth. The approach facilitates the use of single sideband modulation to reuse the dispersion penalties for propagation through standard fibre. Millimetre-wave modulated optical signal detection by integrated detector/injection locked oscillator will be investigated for the antenna unit, since this approach can overcome the difficulty in realising high gain millimetre-wave amplifiers. The return channel circuitry, which need not be millimetre-wave frequencies, will also be considered to achieve a hybrid integrated antenna unit.
