Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is aimed at developing a new range of porous glass-reinfoced hydroxyapatites (GR-HA) for space filling with particular reference to bone and rooth substance lost due to periodontal disease and dental caries respectively. The work will centre around the utilisation of reticulated foam technology for production of the porous GR-HA. The main aim will be the optimisation of the slip rheology to produce consistent foams. The second major target is to produce a range of phosphate based glasses which will enhance both the mechanical properties of the foam and will also later the biological properties, by entering the synthetic HA structure and undertaking an interstitial or substitutional role as may be seen with a variety of different ions in natural HA. These ions will thus help to make the synthetic HA more closely resemble natural HA. The exact nature of the substitution will be investigated by X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction experiments using the HRPD station at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. The final aim of the project will be to give a porous apatite based material with consistent and enhanced mechanical and biological properties.
