Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will combine silica-on-silicon channel optical waveguide components and Si-based micro-mechanical parts to form compete optical information gathering systems. This systems will operate by image scanning using electrostatic deflection of cantilevered waveguides and confocal detection of the backscattered signal. The waveguide circuits will be fabricated using an existing high ^n sol-gel process. The actuators will be comb-drive structures based on existing (purely mechanical) components and fabricated by a combination of dry and wet etching. Significant cost reduction is expected from integration of optical and mechanical functions and packaging improvements. Depending on the number of mechanical degrees of freedom and the layout of the waveguide circuit, the systems will act either as tracking read heads for optical discs or as scanners for bar code readers. There is also potential for telecoms switching and optical backplane applications. Integration strategies and systems trade-offs (scan length, speed, precision; light level, signal-to-noise ratio, signal processing) will be investigated.
