Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent developments in discrete element method together with efficient robust in-house contact detection and interaction procedures for systems comprising millions of particles of irregular shape and size have made numerical modelling an ideal and timely tool to address the long-standing problem of packing of irregularly sized and shaped rock fragments. The overall project aim is computer simulation of micromechanical processes during packing of rock fragments and the study of void porosity as a function of particle size and shape distributions, surface roughness and friction, packing history and heterogeneity within the pack.More accurate prediction and control of porosity will be widely valued because the space filling properties of the fragments tend to dominate their engineering behaviour.Addressing quarrying operations, the proposed research will consider rock fragment packs of the type associated with blast-pile formation and aggregate processing. Field study of quarry blast-piles and stockpiles using volume surveys will help explore some simple applications. The project will enhance UK expertise in geotechnics.
