Summary on Grant Application Form
Water, despite its apparent molecular simplicity, is by no means a simply liquid. The complexity of its nature (often described interms of a number of anomalies) has long been recognised, but there are still no convincing explanations, despite considerable research effort by scientists across different scientific disciplines to try to understand these unusual properties. In the last few years, this group has systematically studied the dynamics of ice, water and water in confined geometry using various neutron scattering techniques. These studies made us believe there may be two strengths of hydrogen bonds present in ice/water (J-C. Li, J. Chem. Phys. 105 (1996) 6733). A theory to explain the abnormal properties of water is therefore developed (J-C. Li and D.K. Ross, Nature, 365 (1993) 327) based on our experimental data. Applying a similar techniques to the supercritical water is the logical extension of our research activity. It provides additional information for us to test the theory. In addition, understanding of the properties of the supercritical water has also considerable importance to a range of scientific disciplines and to industry applications. Therefore, a number of experiments have been granted though collaboration with the scientists in Argonne National Laboratory.
