Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our aim is to establish efficient synthetic routes for the attachment of poly-alcohol (arborol) groups to tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) core units. These will be new types of arborol systems, tailored with the objective of obtaining electronically-conductive nanoscale supramolecular wires. The self-assembly process will be studied as a function of the number and structure of the substituents on the TTF unit. There are precedents that systems of this type will form gels, the structural and electronic transport properties of which will be amenable to detailed studies.A special feature of the expected superstructures of TTF-arborols is their resemblance to traditional electrical cables with the inner (partially-oxidised) TTF stacks acting as the conductive core, and the surrounding hydrocarbon chains acting as the insulating sheath.
