Summary on Grant Application Form
Thermal barrier coatings, needed for higher thrust with increased efficiency in gas turbines, consist of an alumina-forming alloy or intermetallic bond coat and a porous ceramic outer layer. Excellent integrity of the growing alumina scale on the bond coat is essential in service since spallation of the scale would result in loss of TBC. An experimental programme will be undertaken to attain the objectives, with emphasis on the effects of elements from the substrate and the bond coat on scale adhesion/cohesion and mechanical integrity. Studies of growth and modes of spallation of scales form first generation designed-in bond coats on first and second generation turbine alloys during isothermal and thermal cycling tests at 1100 degrees and 1200 degrees centigrade will be accompanied by special tests to allow the effects of minor elements in the bond coat and in the substrate, either singly or in combination, to be ascertained. The integrity of the scales will be determined and locations of the substrate elements ascertained by various analytical techniques, especially TEM and SNMS. Improved mechanistic understanding of scale failure processes should benefit future modelling for lifetime predictions.
