This proposal will utilise the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source to probe in situ the development of size and structure in a selection of nucleating systems. The systems selected span solutions, melts, organic and inorganic materials. Experiments will be performed in real time with simultaneous collection of small and wide angle diffracted and scattered radiation. The experimental systems have been selected to yield high supersaturations exhibit molecular aggregation and be good x-ray scatterers. By performing experiments under stopped flow and plug-flow conditions it will be possible to achieve a time resolution of 10 milliseconds and hence track structural and dimensional changes in significant detail. Given these new data their impact on traditional nucleation theory and hence product control will be assessed.
