The proposed research seeks to develop monolithic PlyHIPE materials as stationary phases for HPLC. Their interconnected structure allows the convective flow of the mobile phase through the separation medium, producing low pressure drops at high flowrates. This gives fast mass transfer of the solutes to the stationary phase. Transport by convection also ensures good column efficiency at high flowrates, producing extremely rapid separations. PholyHIPE materials will be prepared with a variety of chemistries. Poly(styrene/divinylbenzene) (PS/DVB) are well known and will be studied initially. These will be tested in the reverse-phase separation on non-polar species. Poly(acrylamide) materials will also be prepared for normal mode and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. A silica monolith will be produced and derivatised with a long-chain alkane to give a bonded-phase support for reverse-phase separations. Finally, materials for ion-exchange chromatography, based on poly(glycidyl methacrylate), will be developed.The hydrodynamic properties of the materials, and their relation to morphology, will be studied and suitable chromatographic test on each will be performed. Comparisons will be made with conventional separation media and other monolithic materials.
