Summary on Grant Application Form
The development of large area, field emission-based flat screen display devices is likely to become a major source of wealth creation within the next decade. Work by the applicants has demonstrated that porous silicon field emitters have considerable advantages. We propose to develop the materials science and technology of these emitters to the stage where the construction of a commercial prototype display becomes feasible. Work on the synthesis and atomic scale characterisation of emitters will be carried out at Oxford University. In parallel with this, work will be carried out at R.A.L on the development of material processing techniques to produce addressable arrays of field emitting devices. The materials and techniques used will be chosen so as to be compatible with the manufacture of large area displays.
