Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a two year extension to an ongoing 1 year feasibility study of a new hybrid device incorporating thin film oxide ferroelectrics (OFEs) and liquid crystals (LCs) (GR/k89665). The feasibility study has run for just over six months and has already produced significant progress in the study of the new hybrid device suggested. We wish to investigate in detail the potential of a new hybrid display device, which offers advantages in performance, cost and fabrication over existing systems. The new device is based on nematic LCs and includes thin film OFEs with the aim of imparting the desirable properties of bistability and enhanced speed to the device. The programme utilises two areas of UK expertise, combining thin film OFE and LC technology. The novel device architecture has desirable properties for the displays industry while understanding the complex physical interactions of the components provides an excellent academic challenge. We note that we have to date achieved the original milestones and goals of the feasibility study, showing that our original ideas and work plan were sound. This proposal details the extensions to the feasibility study, bearing in mind the exciting progress already made.
