Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is concerned with the elucidation of the excitation mechanisms of rare-earth ions in rare-earth doped silicon-rich silica and is a development of recent successful work carried out by the group. It is intended to be a study of the physics underlying the optical properties of doped nanoscale clusters rather than a purely materials based project. Previously we have demonstrated that it is possible to produce erbium-doped silicon rich silica in which the rare-earth ions may be excited via the silica host. It appears that direct optical excitation of silicon nanoclusters within the silica host is followed by efficient energy transfer to the rare-earth ion and characteristic erbium emission in the infra-red. Given the paucity of understanding of the cluster-ion exchange mechanism and the wide range of applications for material exploiting it, there is a powerful argument for further investigating the optical properties of rare-earth doped silicon nanoclusters. This we propose to do through a programme of detailed measurements of luminescence dynamics, chemical environment of the rare-earth ion and the link between silicon nanocluster luminescence and that from the rare-earth.
