Summary on Grant Application Form |
The growth in the number of older people offers scope for the development of customised information/navigation aids to help them to find their way around complex public spaces. New technology however is unlikely to be taken up by older people unless it is acceptable to them. The research will involve engineers in designing, testing and modifying a model of such an aid in conjunction with a sample of older people.Older people, in particular those with sensory and cognitive impairments and with limited mobility, may be given confidence in going out and carrying on with normal social activities, this enhancing their quality of life. Gains in physical and psychological energy, by making it easier and more enjoyable to find their way around complex public environments, have potentially beneficial health effects. The technology required for developing such aids is only now becoming technically feasible. The integration of a user perspective - that of the older person - with the design and piloting offers scope for developments in the future.
