Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will use surface x-ray diffraction to address two outstanding issues in structural surface science. One is associated with the role of stress in driving adsorbate-induced metal surface reconstructions and in generating self-organised nanostructures. Key experiments involve measurements of Pt(111)-H,O, Rh(100)-p4g-0 and Cu(100)-N. The second area is associated with the relaxation of polar metal oxide surfaces and their modification by a Cu overlayer. This will involve studies of the O-terminated (0001) basal face face of ZnO and diffraction is the technique of choice with which to address these issues, particularly because kinematical analysis enables the complex surfaces involved to be examined with unparalleled accuracy. The underlying motivation for the proposed work lies in understanding processes which are likely to be important in technologies such as gas sensing, catalysis and nanotechnology. Our work here is aimed at understanding in detail the behaviour of model systems.
