The direct ink-jet printing of ceramic and metal powders pioneered by the applicants, is a method of microengineering of components by computer control. Well-dispersed suspensions of powder pass through fine (25-75um) nozzles and droplets are positioned at high accuracy and high speed. Printer technology is advancing in terms of resolution and speed at a pace and this project will use some of the most advanced printheads available in reprography. The transfer of this technology to materials processing involves carefully thought-out adaptation rather than massive capitalization. The feasibility has already been proven. In this project we intend to define the limitations on ink properties and explore the different types of ink that can be used to make ceramic and metal systems, such as microcircuits and capacitors. We intend to explore the printer operation and modification needed to handle suspensions of dense particulates. We hope that the outcome of this project will be a large scale transfer of one of the most sophisticated printing operations known to powder processing. We hope that having jointly initiated direct jet printing in the UK we will have the opportunity to demonstrate and explore its capabilities.
