Summary on Grant Application Form |
The development of an accurate analysis, for the design of active integrated array antennas using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FD-TD). The FD-TD algorithm has been chosen because it will be able to handle the non-linear behaviour of active solid state devices through the development of special extended algorithms for each active device type (Schootky, Gunn diodes, FET transistors, etc). For the early phases of the work attention will be concentrated on accurate modelling of an active antenna containing a radiating element. Code verification will be undertaken using a 700Ghz single chip slot ring mixer. FD-TD cannot be applied to anything but the smallest array antenna due to current computer limitations so two new approaches are proposed for array modelling. In order to take account of the significant effects of mutual coupling in active arrays we intend to apply the Periodic Boundary Condition (within the FD-TD regime) for large (infinite) arrays. For finite arrays we propose taking the FD-TD solution for one active array element and use an Expansion Wave concept to model the EM interactions between the array elements.
