Dodecanedioic acid and lauryl lactum are important bulk intermediates for production of polymers (polymides) with a combined world-wide sale of 100 mio pounds p.a.. In the current processes, the starting material is butadiene which is subject to trimerization to cyclododecatriene, which is converted to cyclododecane. For both products (dodecanedioic acid and lauryl lactam), the intermediate for further oxidation is cyclododecanol and cyclododecanone. The first oxidation to the alcohol is currently carried out by air oxidation under various conditions. All the processes employed, however, are unselective or are subject to separation problems. Thus, we propose to carry out oxidation to the alcohol with N20. It was shown, that over iron containing zeolites N20 is a very selective and active catalyst for oxidation of small aliphatic and for aromatic hydrocarbons. Due to the larger size of the reactants and products in the title process, we propose to prepare and test iron containing mesoporous materials for the oxidation of cyclododecane to cyclododecanol. Since one of the by-products of the subsequent oxidation of the alcohol and ketone to the respective acids with nitric acid is N20, the proposed process will result in advantages both in terms of cost efficiency and environmental protection.
