Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research project aims to developa design methodology for the integrated design of distillation processes. Previous research has shown the importance of taking inro account the heat exchanger network associated with the process when designing a distillation system, but currently no such design methodology exists. The methodology will design for distillation processes which are enrgy efficient, and will facilitate a high degree sequences and pinch analysis of the process heat requirements. The design procedure will allow the engineer to identify systematically changes to the column structure and operating conditions, as well as the use of side heat exchangers. Once these alternative modifications to a proposed design are identified, their benefits will be quantified: criteria for adopting or rejecting the proposed modifications will be developed. Design procedures for both grass roots and retrofit applications will be addressed by the research. By taking an integrated approach to the design, significant savings in ultility costs and reduction in vapour flow can be achieved. Alternatively, existsing plants can be revamped to allow more throughput using these techniques.
