Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will develop ultrafast electron and photon beam diagnostics for the FELIX free-electron laser. Differential optical gating of transition radiation will be used to develop an electron bunch length measurement, utilising a 10 fs Ti: sapphire laser. Along with a newly-developed optical pulse diagnostic, these developments will enable a study of the shape of the 'superradiant' optical pulse in FELIX. These measurements will test recent theoretical predictions by Piovella et al on the shape of these superradiant pulses in 'supermode' theory. We will push the limits of superradiance to obtain the shortest possible optical pulses from FELIX. Improvements will be made to the interactivity power via cavity Q enhancement or upgrading the 1-GHz drive electronics on the electron gun. These techniques will be applied to the long-wavelength extension of FELIX, scheduled for February 1998. We expect that the strong slippage will produce even more prominent short pulse enhancement.
