Summary on Grant Application Form |
The focus of the research is the construction of fully interactive virtual environments (VEs) which faithfully represent real-world scenes. It addresses the following fundamental problems: the creation of a structured geometric model from sequences of images; the extraction of lighting and material characteristics necessary for correct illumination; and the integration of these into a demonstrable solution whose accuracy and utility can be quantified. To provide a focus for this, the results will be applied to the modelling of scenes of crime in collaboration with the Greater Manchester Police Computer Investigations Unit, and Harlequin Ltd. Experiments will be conducted to quantify the accuracy of the constructed VEs with respect to geometry and illumination. An assessment will be made of the utility of the VEs for scene of crime analysis.
