This is an interdisciplinary project between the materials and Physics Departments of the Universities of Surrey and York. The research is a systematic experimental and theoretical study of alloying behaviour in Tm-A1 and Mg-TM alloy systems (TM= transition metal) which have been selected because they form the basis of the constitution of conventional and developmental alloys, including Ti intermetallics. The aim of the research is to study hybridisation phenomena and the charge transfer (CT) between solvent and solute atoms in alloys. Changes in the Auger parameter (AP) determined from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments will be used as a tool to probe the electronic changes that take place as aresult of alloying. Theresearch underpins the exploitation of materials to the benefit of the UK industry, will benefit alloy designers, developers and users and will foster core competencies of the Metallurgical, Material Science and Metal Physics communities in the UK. The novelty and timeliness of the proposed research become clear when considering tth eurgency with which current R7D programmes in Japan, Germany, USA and France are planned to enhance alloy design capabilities, especially in the latter two countries.
