Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will continue our torsional oscillator and NMR studies of superfliud 3He in aerogel. By varying pressure, magnetic field and aerogel density, and also by replacing the magnetic solid3He layer on the aerogel surfaces with non-magnetic 4He, we intend to determine the number and nature of the superfluid phases. We will investigate the extent to which theory can explain the effect of the aerogel on the properties. By using our rotating cryostat we will look for vortices and persistent currents in the 3He in aerogel.By measuring the effect of the sign of the magnetic field and/or the orbital texture on the threshold field for the Freedericksz transition we will determine the spontaneous ferromagnetic moment in 3He-A. By studying the response of the texture to a time-dependent field we will check the orbital dynamics of theory and measure the orbital inertia. By looking at coupling between an acoustic measurement in a hemispherical volume and the Helmholtz resonance associated with a superleak at it's centre we plan to investigate the non-linear relationship between the superfluid mass current and velocity in 3He-B.
