Summary on Grant Application Form |
Airborne gamma spectrometry is increasingly used for rapid investigations of natural and anthropogenic radiation in the environment, with particular relevance to environmental studies and nuclear emergency response. Current methods are based on high volume Nal spectrometers operated on their own, or in conjunction with Ge detectors, from low flying aircraft. Detector arrays are frequently summed, resulting in degradation of energy resolution, and in potential loss of information concerning the activity distribution, which is relevant to calibration and interpretation. New detector configurations and data processing methods will be investigated for large Nal(TI) arrays to improve on composite energy resolution, and to recover source distribution information from the signals from individual detector elements. The potential of obtaining further improvements from Csl(TI) detector arrays with photodiode readout will be explored both by stimulation, and through the development of an experimental detector array.
