Summary on Grant Application Form |
Femtosecond laser spectroscopy will be used to investigate the recombination dynamics of novel light-emitting polymers and advanced semiconductor structures. This new initiative builds on, and significantly enhances, existing research strengths of the University of Sheffield in these areas of high technological relevance. The primary objective is to investigate emission processes in light-emitting polymers at high excitation densities. This will contribute significantly to their development for passive matrix addressed displays, amplifiers and lasers. These studies will involve combined femtosecond pump-probe and up-conversion experiments on a range of state-of-the-art polymer samples prepared in Sheffield. The combination of both adsorption (pump-probe) and emission (up-conversion) measurements will allow us to unambiguously identify spectrally overlapping induced adsorption and radiative processes. The comprehensive understanding of these processes is critical for identifying the limiting factors determining lasing dynamics. The secondary objective of the programme is to use similar techniques to study advanced inorganic semiconductor structures and devices grown at the EPSRC III-V Facility in Sheffield. We will investigate carrier capture, relaxation mechanisms of cavity polaritons in GaInAs microcavities; carrier relaxation, recombination and trapping in nitride epilayers and quantum wells.
