Summary on Grant Application Form |
An optoelectronic based switch controller for telecommunications applications is proposed. The initial proposed controller is based around a Hopfield model neural network which will be implemented using a combination of discrete optical and electronic technologies. This hybrid approach will be used to overcome the inherent limitations of a purely electronic system. An accurate simulation of the controller will be formulated from experimental testing of the initial system. This simulation will enable quantative measures of the controller performance to be made as well as allowing extrapolation of the experimental results to larger networks. Finally, advanced packaging techniques together with the 'smart-pixel' technology will be employed to investigate the potential of the proposed controller for use in a real telecommunications application.
